The Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is a vulnerable shark known as a "killing machine" or "top predator," this is true for many fish and sea creatures, but this shark, or any shark, is not out to get us.
The name "White Shark" is because of its white underside. The White Shark has one of the largest ranges of any sea creature, they are found in cold and warm waters.
They feed on seals and other large fish, meaning they are found along beaches where these are commonly found.
Great white sharks can grow up to 16 feet and weight around 1,500-2,400 pounds. Some have been known to weigh around 4,000 pounds but that is not the norm.
More people have been attacked by great white sharks than any other shark species. Locations where they are living have been identified and people are encouraged to stay away from them. Even so, swimmers, surfers, and divers have had numerous encounters with them.
